In the peak of 2021 lockdowns, I joined a local songwriting group called "Song Every Week" and did exactly that! We individually wrote songs every week, holding each other accountable to the deadline, and emerged with many song seeds.

My latest release, All Colours, takes the output of that intense creative period through another few months of production work with all forms of granulation, slicing, and blurring of sounds, creating something more ethereal, dense, and organic sounding. I synthesized various forms of noise to color the sound and give it some breath. The finished result is this diverse collection of eight songs, arranged to feel good in deep listening, while focused at work, or even falling asleep.

The album opens up with the clarity and brightness of three songs performed with my modular synthesizer and the very hi-res sounding Nord Lead 4 synth. I had lots of fun using the Mutable Instruments Marbles module to generate and perform the melodies you hear in those looping sequences.

What follows next is a series of dense ambient vignettes, primarily recorded with digital synths and granular looping performances. (SuperCollider | monome norns) Suppose you listen carefully in the depth of those cloudy textures... you might be able to pick out the melodies and progressions that lie beneath. These were once recordings of melodies and colourful neo-classical progressions, now smeared over with all kinds of digital magic. I patiently worked on creating a sound that is hopefully, pleasantly abstract, imperfect, and obfuscated.

The closing track spotlights my favourite sound of the album, a long-play field recording of aspen trees with no leaves, clattering in a gusty Spring wind. I sat in the middle of the forest one afternoon recording these sounds with delight and was met with how the energy of this album would flow and the story to be told. A wonderfully magical and connected moment, with gratitude to the forest.
